George Bernard Shaw’s CANDIDA was one of his earliest works, following his three first full length plays, grouped as ‘Plays Unpleasant‘ (1892-1893). CANDIDA was written in 1894 and first published in 1898 as part of his ‘Plays Pleasant‘ trilogy.

After an attempt to bring CANDIDA to the London stage in the 1890’s, in 1904, six matinees were performed at The Royal Court Theatre in London. Following this, several other of Shaw’s plays were staged from 1904-1907, including further revivals of CANDIDA.

The play’s central theme is about a woman’s choice between two men – her husband, James Morell and a poet, Eugene Marchbanks. It contrasts the outlook and aspirations of a Christian Socialist and a poetic idealist.

What is Candida about?

The play follows a trio of main characters, clergyman James Morell, his wife Candida and a youthful poet, Eugene Marchbanks who attempts to win Candida’s affections. The narrative of Candida questions the Victorian ideas of love and marriage and asks what a woman really desires from her husband.
