WHAT THE BUTLER SAW is a two-act comedy farce and final play written by English Playwright Jo Orton. Orton completed the play in July 1967, which was one month before his death. The original production premiered in the West End at the Queen’s Theatre on 5 March 1969.

The drama is continuous throughout the two-acts and the play opens to a scene with Dr Prentice who is a psychiatrist attempting to seduce his attractive prospective secretary, Geraldine Barclay, and invites her to undress. An unexpected visit by his wife forces Dr Prentice to hide the girl. As the play continues, the affairs multiply. We learn that Mrs. Prentice is being seduced and blackmailed by young bellhop Nicholas Beckett.

The play brings together several themes such as mental health, sexuality, identity and sex equality, all of which troubled and intrigued Orton himself.
