American playwright Suzan-Lori Parks’ dark comedic play, TOPDOG/UNDERDOG premiered Off-Broadway in New York City in 2001. The following year in 2002, the play made its Broadway debut at the Ambassador Theatre and also received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Outer Critics Circle Award. It most recently returned to Broadway at the John Golden Theater where it ran until 15th January 2023.

TOPDOG/UNDERDOG follows the narrative of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers who have been living together in Booth’s skint apartment since Lincoln was thrown out of his own home by his wife.

We see the brothers deal with themes such as poverty, racism, work, women, and their troubled past. Booth constantly reminds Lincoln that his presence was agreed as a temporary arrangement, however Lincoln is their sole source of income, working as an Abraham Lincoln impersonator. Booth’s talents lie in shoplifting.

Whilst Lincoln prefers honest work, Booth attempts to convince him to return to the hustle of the street con game; three-card monte.

It is a story of brotherly love and family identity.
