The Homecoming

Written by renowned British playwright Harold Pinter, THE HOMECOMING is often considered by audiences to be an ambiguous and often cryptic play.

The two-act play, written in 1964, first premiered in London in 1965 and New York in 1967, both directed by Sir Peter Hall. The Broadway production went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play, with the 40th anniversary Broadway production in following suit and winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play in 2008.

THE HOMECOMING has graced several London stages since its premiere, including a 2008 production at the Almeida Theatre which Pinter himself attentded the first night of, and a 2015 revival at the Trafalgar Studios directed by Jamie Lloyd.

As this play is so popular, it’s likely that it will return to London’s West End some time in the future – hopefully making itself at home in the Harold Pinter Theatre.

What is The Homecoming about?

After living together in the US for six years, Teddy and his wife Ruth make the journey to London so that Ruth can meet Teddy’s working-class family for the first time. Tension rises between the family members, prompted by Ruth teasing Teddy’s three brothers and father, and the men all try to prove themselves trying to win her affections and attention. When Teddy offers Ruth an ultimatum – stay in London or return home to their three sons- she chooses to stay as one of the family and seals her own fate.
