Irish playwright, John Millington Synge’s, three-act comedic play PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD was first staged at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, in January 1907.

PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD is predominantly set in a run-down public house on the west coast of Ireland during the 1900s. It follows the story of a mysterious young man, Christy Mahon, who claims to have killed his father, a violent and cruel man.

After hearing the rousing story, the locals are impressed by Christy’s courageous deed, assuming that he must have had good reason for patricide. Christy gains an idol-like status among the villagers until his father shows up very much alive.

The play is well-known for its use of the poetic and evocative Irish dialect, Hiberno-English, and celebrates the lyrical speech of the Irish.
