Merrily We Roll Along
Venue information Get DirectionsWhat is Merrily We Roll Along about?
Famously told in reverse chronology, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG tells the story of three creatives; Frank, an idealistic songwriter, Charley, Frank’s best friend, playwright and lyricist, and Mary, an aspiring writer and drama critic. But when the show opens, Frank is a mega-success in Hollywood, Charley is still grafting in the theatre, and Mary is a drunk – so what happened?
This story about friendships corrupted by success was initially a Broadway flop, closing after 16 performances in 1981 . In the years since, Sondheim and Furth have reworked the book and score, and as a result MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG has enjoyed multiple successful productions around the world.
