Hedda Gabler

Written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, HEDDA GABLER is considered to be a masterpiece within nineteenth century theatre and literary realism.

Sometimes described as a female version of Hamlet, HEDDA GABLER initially faced negative reviews when it was first performed in 1981 in Munich. However over time it has been widely accepted as a staple of world drama, with the character of Hedda Gabler being considered one of theatre’s greatest dramatic roles.

After opening in Munich, the first London performance of HEDDA GABLER followed mere months later, opening in the Vaudeville Theatre in April of the same year. Since then there have been numerous versions of this play, including a 1970 run at the Royal National Theatre starring Maggie Smith, and the most recent version in 2016 at the National Theatre starring Ruth Wilson and Rafe Spall.

As this is a highly popular play with audiences, it’s likely that it will come back to London’s West End some time in the future.
