First premiered on Broadway in 1959, A RAISIN IN THE SUN by Lorraine Hansberry is often listed as one of the best plays ever written.

Groundbreaking for the time it was created, A RAISIN IN THE SUN features a cast in which all but one member is Black. The original Broadway production in 1959 played for a run of 530 performances and was directed by Lloyd Richards, featuring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee as Walter Lee and Ruth Younger. Despite concerns that the play may not have been a success, it was nominated for four Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Actor in a Play, Best Actress in a Play, and Best Direction of a Play.

A mere five months after opening on Broadway, A RAISIN IN THE SUN also transferred to the West End’s Adelphi Theatre, however the most recent UK production was performed in Manchester in 2010 so it’s possible a West End production could be returning in the future.

What is A Raisin in the Sun about?

After the death of their father, the Younger family are looking to improve their financial situation using the life insurance payout they received, however this isn’t an easy task as they constantly face prejudice and discrimination from other people around them, as well as fighting amongst themselves too.
