By the glow of candlelight, in the depths of winter, discover the magic of Shakespeare’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM for the very first time in the indoor Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
Set in the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for the first time, this dark, dreamlike take on Shakespeare’s comedy blurs the line between fantasy and nightmare in a hauntingly magical world.
Following 2022’s ‘extraordinary’ ★★★★ (The Observer) co-production of Henry V, Shakespeare’s Globe collaborates once again with ‘hugely influential’ (Time Out) touring theatre company Headlong to shine candlelight on the shadowy underbelly of one of Shakespeare’s most-loved plays. Headlong’s Artistic Director Holly Race Roughan directs, with co-direction from Naeem Hayat (The Comedy of Errors, 2023/24).

What is A Midsummer Night’s Dream about?
To escape a society ruled by tyrannical law, four young lovers flee to the forest beyond the city walls.
Unbeknownst to them, the world of the woods has been turned upside down by a fierce battle between the Fairy King and Queen, Oberon and Titania, over the ownership of a stolen child.
As the dispute rages on, more people fall victim to the jealousy-fuelled forces of the powerful pair, and the disturbing spells of Oberon’s unruly lackey Puck. As day turns to night, reality becomes illusion, and snow starts to fall in summer, can anyone stop the Dream from becoming a nightmare?

The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the brand new candlelit indoor theatre, located on the Shakespeare's Globe site and is accessed through the main foyer.
Located on the bank of the River Thames in Bankside's Cultural Quarter, Shakespeare's Globe welcomes thousands of visitors to experience world renowned productions of Shakespeare every day.
Founded by the pioneering American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, Shakespeare's Globe stands a few hundred yards from its original site. Other than concessions to comply with modern day fire regulations, the Globe is as accurate a reconstruction of the 1599 Globe as was possible with the available evidence.
The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is best accessed on foot. There are excellent footpaths along the river from Waterloo and from Southwark Bridge. The Millennium Footbridge is 50 metres from the Theatre.
