Sunday in the Park with George is a soaring musical inspired by a painting called A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by George Seurat. The story begins with the love story of George and Dot, who find themselves more and more distant from each other as a result of George’s artistic struggles. While he is trying to find his lost artistic voice, he starts to lose Dot, the only person who has always seen him as the person he truly is. Ten years later, the story sees George and Dot’s descendant who find themselves having the same problems - they and their art not comprehendible by society.

Sunday in the Park with George unveils truths about love, passion and art universal for every time period and generation.

The Broadway production of Sunday in the Park with George first opened in 1984. The book was written by Tony Award winner James Lapine and the music by Academy Award winner Stephen Sondheim. Sunday was the first collaboration between both Lapine and Sondheim of which it won the 1985 Pulitzer prize. Their second collaboration was a musical based on the tales of Brothers Grimm called Into The Woods. Sunday revived on Broadway in 2008 and again in 2016 at the New York City Center with non-other than BAFTA-winning actor Jake Gyllenhaal taking the lead role alongside Annaleigh Ashford. Both Jake and Annaleigh reprised their City Center performances on Broadway at the reopened Hudson Theatre for a limited run in 2017. They will both be playing the lead roles in the new London production.

Jake Gyllenhaal, full name Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal, plays the lead role of George Seurat; a painter who immerses himself deeply in painting his famous masterpiece. He also takes the role of his great-grandson (also named George), a conflicted and cynical contemporary artist. Jake began acting as a child taking his first role in 1991 when he was just 11 years old. Since then he has gone on to act in many roles and has received critical acclaim winning a BAFTA award for best-supporting actor in Brokeback Mountain and has been nominated for two golden globe awards. In Sunday in the Park with George, Jake plays alongside Broadway actress Annaleigh Ashford.

Annaleigh Ashford plays the part of Dot and is known for her roles as Glinda in Wicked, Margot in Legally Blonde and Lauren in Kinky BootsAnnaleigh’s love for performing on the stage was born at an early age as she was enrolled in a dance studio at the age of six. She got her first professional role as Tina Denmark, the lead in Ruthless! when she was nine. While scoring roles in the ensembles of The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Paint Your Wagon, Little Women, Grease, she also managed to graduate from high school in three years at the age of 16 and to earn a college degree in theatre in another three years at the age of 19. The actress made her film debut with a small role on Sex and the City: The Movie. She has also made an appearance in Rachel Getting Married
