With all the news about new productions coming to the West End, we’re keeping our ears to the ground for any exciting news. Variety and Deadline have both reported that film star Sacha Baron Cohen is about to swap satire for swashbuckling to take the lead in Quentin Tarantino’s first-ever stage play when it lands in the West End next spring.

Quentin Tarantino — yes, that Quentin Tarantino — is finally bringing his mysterious West End debut to life, and rumour has it he’s recruited Sacha Baron Cohen to lead the charge. According to reports from Deadline, out of Deadline, Baron Cohen is set to play the title role in The Popinjay Cavalier, described as a “rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise” set in 1830s Europe. Though no exact date has been confirmed for the play’s arrival, sources close to the production have suggested that the show will land at an as-yet-undisclosed West End venue in spring 2027.

This will mark both Tarantino’s first outing as a stage writer-director. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has been quietly working on the script since January 2025, having first floated the idea of a play back in 2024, with Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment attached to produce. The production was confirmed earlier this year, and Tarantino is reportedly relocating to London to oversee the play’s development, which he describes as a “sweeping celebration of theatre.”

While casting remains under wraps, the production has launched an official website and social media ahead of its early 2027 opening.
