Jessica Chastain makes her West End debut as Nora in Frank McGuinness’ ‘triumphant and thrilling’ (The New Yorker) adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s A DOLL’S HOUSE, in a radical new production by director Jamie Lloyd at the Playhouse Theatre.

“I am a human being, just as much as you are.”

Nora seems to have it all – a successful husband, adorable children and a beautiful home. But her acceptance of the status quo is about to undergo a profound change. Is this picture perfect life anything more than an act? And what happens if she is no longer willing to play her role?

Following Cyrano de Bergerac and The Seagull, the third and final show in The Jamie Lloyd Company’s Playhouse Season is a story of one woman’s fight for her own life.

What is A Doll’s House about?

Henrik Ibsen wrote A DOLL’S HOUSE in 1879, and it was first performed in Copenhagen later that year. It is a three-act play which follows the journey of Nora, a housewife who becomes increasingly unsatisfied with her lifestyle, and more importantly, with her husband who she realises is condescending and egotistic. Ibsen based A Doll’s House on the real life of a good friend, Laura Kieler who had a similar experience with her husband Victor. The author denies this was written as a feminist play but it caused controversy and was certainly ahead of its time in its main theme, regarding the role of woman in the home and in society.

Two-time Acadamy Award and Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain will star as Nora in this exciting production. Chastain is well known as an actress and producer and is connected to films with feminist themes, so will be right at home with this extraordinary story. She studied at Julliard and despite being most famous for her role in blockbuster films, she is no stranger to the stage having starred in productions of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, and Wilde’s Salome in 2006. She lit up the big screen in The Help, Zero Dark Thirty and The Tree of Life as well as many others.

Jamie Lloyd is a British director who is known for bringing fresh eyes on plays and attracting new audiences to the theatre through his visions. He promotes affordable ticket prices with the primary result being that young and diverse audiences will buy a ticket. In 2013 the Jamie Lloyd Company was formed with the Ambassador Theatre Group (who also own LOVEtheatre). With this company he has presented some incredible work in the West End including The Pride, The Hothouse and Macbeth.
