Bertie Carvel to star in The Hairy Ape at the Old Vic Theatre

    Olivier Award winner Bertie Carvel will star in the Old Vic's upcoming production of The Hairy Ape.

    Carvel will star as 'Yank' in Eugene O’Neill's timeless story of class and identity in New York society.

    Bertie Carvel originated the role of 'Miss Trunchbull' in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Matilda The Musical (Cambridge Theatre), for which he won the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical, one of seven Oliviers for the production. He reprised this role when Matilda transferred to Broadway's Schubert Theatre in 2013, going on to win the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical.

    Carvel's theatre credits include Revelations (Hampstead Theatre), Coram Boy, The Life of Galileo, The Man of Mode, and Damned By Despair (all National Theatre), Parade (Donmar Warehouse), The Pride (Royal Court), Doctor Dee (Manchester International Festival), as well as the forthcoming Bakkhai (Almeida Theatre).

    Most recently Carvel starred in the BBC1 series Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. He's appeared in several TV programmes, including the upcoming Dr Foster (BBC), Coalition (Channel 4), The Wrong Mans (BBC), Babylon (Channel 4), Restless (BBC), Hidden, The Crimson Petal and the White, Sherlock, Midsomer Murders, Doctor Who, and Hawking. Carvel also appeared in the film adaptation of Les Miserables.

    The Hairy Ape will begin previews 17 October, running until 21 November 2015. Further casting is yet to be announced.
