Nominated for the WhatsOnStage Awards 2024 for Best Musical Revival

THE SOUND OF MUSIC is a popular stage musical originally inspired by the 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Von Trapp. It premiered at the Shubert Theatre in Connecticut in 1959 and has since been staged on London’s West End several times as well as on Broadway.

Set in Austria during the Second World War, THE SOUND OF MUSIC tells the story of free-spirted nun Maria who becomes a governess for the Von Trapp family. She falls in love with the children’s widowed father, Captain Von Trapp. Through the trials of a Second World War Austria, the Captain is ordered to join the German navy. As a result, the Von Trapp’s decide to escape their beloved Austria and flee to safety.

In 1965 THE SOUND OF MUSIC was adapted for film and starred Julie Andrews in the female lead role of Maria as well as the late Christopher Plummer as Captain Von Trapp. It was one of the most commercially successful films of all time and featured well known songs such as ‘My Favourite Things‘ and ‘Edelweiss‘.
