  • Sir Trevor Nunn returns to direct SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE in the intimacy of London’s St James Theatre, starring Olivia Williams and Mark Bazeley.

A portrait of extraordinary intimacy, SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE runs for a strictly limited season until 9 November. This honest and moving love story follows Johan and Marianne from their seemingly perfect happy marriage through betrayal and loss to warring contenders in divorce and beyond.

Acclaimed stage and film actor Olivia Williams plays Marianne. Most recently seen in the West End in In a Forest Dark and Deep (Vaudeville Theatre) and on film in The Sixth Sense, An Education, she won ‘Best Supporting Actress’ awards from the National Society of Film Critics, London Critics’ Circle Film Awards and the Los Angeles Film Critics’ Awards for Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer. Joining her is award-winning actor Mark Bazeley as Johan, last seen in the National Theatre's The Seagull, and on film in The Queen, The Bourne Ultimatum and The Damned United.

One of the UK’s leading theatre, film and television directors, Trevor Nunn has been Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. His extensive repertoire includes the musicals Cats and Les Misérables, for which he won Tony Awards, and the Olivier Award-winning Summerfolk, The Merchant of Venice, Troilus and Cressida and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Nunn originally directed SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE five years ago to open the new small space at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry.

Ingmar Bergman's SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE was originally created for television and has acquired classic status inspiring many other films and directors. This adaptation for the stage by Joanna Murray-Smith (whose play Honour enjoyed major success at the National Theatre and in the West End) is an emotionally powerful and compulsively visceral exploration of what happens when a marriage disintegrates.
