The Taming Of The Shrew

Step inside an absurd carnival this summer as Shakespeare’s vicious comedy THE TAMING OF THE SHREW arrives in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Bianca isn’t allowed to marry until her older sister Katherina is wedded. But what will it take for a man to mould this fiercely independent woman into a wife? Following 2022’s ‘brilliantly provocative’ ★★★★ (The Guardian) Titus Andronicus, Jude Christian debuts in the Globe Theatre directing Shakespeare’s cutting, provocative exploration of gender stereotypes and expectations, asking us where we draw the line between entertainment and complicity, reality and the absurd?

‘For I am born to tame you, Kate,
And bring you from a wild Kate to a Kate
Comfortable as other household Kates.’
– Act II, scene 1

What is The Taming of the Shrew about?

Lucentio is determined to win the beautiful Bianca’s hand in marriage. When her father declares that it will only happen once her older sister Katherina is wedded, the competition to mould the fiercely independent Katherina into obedient wifey material begins.

The front runner is larger-than-life Petruchio. But with Katherina as proud as she is, it’s going to take shocking levels of manipulation to win her as his bride…
