The upcoming West End production of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY has confirmed further cast members. Under the direction of Academy Award® winner Sam Mendes, and joining Tony and Olivier award winner Douglas Hodge as Willy Wonka, will be NIGEL PLANER as loveable Grandpa Joe who accompanies Charlie on his adventure through Mr. Wonka's factory.
In a career spanning television, theatre and film, Nigel is best known for his role as hippie housemate Neil on cult BBC comedy The Young Ones. His first break in theatre came as an understudy in the original West End production of Evita. Nigel also starred as Amos Heart in Chicago's original London cast. He was an original member of the West End cast of Ben Elton's Queen musical We Will Rock You as Pop. Nigel also starred as The Wizard alongside Idina Menzel in the original West End production of Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. His other London theatre credits include Alan Ayckbourn's Man of the Moment and Hairspray.
West End veteran MYRA SANDS will play Grandma Georgina. She appeared in the original West End casts of Evita and Cats, in addition to Oliver!, Gigi, The Boy Friend, Acorn Antiques, Grease, Sweeney Todd, the National Theatre productions of Summerfolk, Honk! and Candide and most recently, Ivor Novello's Gay’s The Word. Myra has also appeared in Les Misérables as Madame Thenardier and the Les Misérables 10th Anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
CLIVE CARTER, who'll play Mr. Salt (father of Veruca), was nominated for an Olivier for his performance as Prince/ Wolf in the original London production of Into the Woods. His West End theatre credits include Someone Like You with Petula Clark, A Man for All Seasons, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Brendan Fraser and Ned Beatty, We Will Rock You, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Always and Side by Side by Sondheim.
JASNA IVIR will portray Mrs. Gloop, mother to Augustus. Jasna previously appeared in the original London cast of The Witches of Eastwick, as well as The Phantom of the Opera, Chicago and Mamma Mia!
PAUL J. MEDFORD will star as Mr. Beauregarde, father of Violet. He's most widely recognised for his early stint on EastEnders as Kelvin Carpenter. Paul was a member of the original London cast of Five Guys Named Moe, for which he was nominated for an Olivier for Best Actor in a Musical. He also featured in the original West End production of The Lion King as Banzai. His other theatre credits include Hair and Sweet Charity.
Mrs. Teavee will be played by IRIS ROBERTS, who previously tread the boards at the Donmar Warehouse and at Shakespeare’s Globe in God of Soho and Doctor Faustus. In 2012 she appeared in The Duchess of Malfi at The Old Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Heart of Robin Hood as Marion. Iris also boasts several TV credits including Justice and Law and Order. She can be seen in the National Theatre’s Captain of Köpenick from 29 January.
Mr. and Mrs. Bucket will be played by JACK SHALLOO and ALEX CLATWORTHY, respectively. Other cast will include Joe Allen, David Birch, Michelle Bishop, Mireia Mambo Bokele, Matthew Clark, Jennifer Davison, Luke Fetherston, Nia Fisher, Kate Graham, Clare Halse, Mark Iles, Daniel Ioannou, Kieran Jae, Jane McMurtrie, Natalie Moore-Williams, Sherrie Pennington, Damien Poole, Paul Saunders and Jay Webb.
