Following its rave reviews at the Tricycle Theatre earlier this year, The Father opened last night to five-star reviews at London's Wyndhams Theatre.

Tony and Olivier Award nominees, Kenneth Cranham and Claire Skinner reprise their indelible performances as the eighty year old Andre and his daughter Anne, both coping with Andre's increasing dementia.

"I’d say it was “unforgettable” if this unqualified triumph didn’t load that superlative with long-lingering, chilling doubt," says The Telegraph's Dominic Cavendish in his five-star review, calling the play "an unqualified triumph."

The Financial Times' Ian Shuttleworth calls the production "terrifying and brilliant" in his five-star review, noting especially Kenneth Cranham's "lynchpin" performance as Andre.

In the Guardian, Michael Billington's four-star review praises Florian Zeller's play as "is a highly accomplished piece of writing," "vividly translated" by Christopher Hampton. He goes on, "Kenneth Cranham is superb as Andre. By never asking for our sympathy he naturally receives it. He is unafraid to show us that Andre is awkward, difficult, demanding and used to exercising control. At the same time, he shows us Andre’s vulnerability, dependence and growing fear that nothing in his world makes sense." As well, he praises Claire Skinner, who "catches precisely Anne’s air of fatigued concern."

The Father is running at Wyndham's Theatre through Saturday 21 November 2015.
