Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary CATS musical made a triumphant return to the West End last night, garnering four and five star reviews for Nicole Scherzinger and the entire company.

The Daily Mail gave the show FIVE STARS, while The Independent, Daily Express, The Guardian, The Telegraph and Evening Standard all gave FOUR STARS.

With FIVE STARS, Quentin Letts of the Daily Mail described Scherzinger as “near purr-fect... In X Factor jargon, [she] nailed it, her low voice almost gasping with emotion [and] lusty, self-discovering power... The combination of Lloyd Webber airs and T.S. Eliot verses is an enduring artistic achievement.”

Sir Trevor Nunn's fine cast is not so much balletic as gymnastic,” with several strong performances such as Paul F. Monaghan's Bustopher Jones, Nicholas Pound's Old Deuteronomy, Ross Finnie's Skimbleshanks and Joseph Poulton's Mistoffelees.

With FOUR STARS The Independent's Paul Taylor called this revival “terrifically fresh and exuberant... a dance-driven spectacular.” He declared Scherzinger has the “miaow factor” and called her casting a “master-stroke”. “Nunn's youthful cast certainly do their utmost to rejuvenate the material, performing the cartwheels, flips, balletic leaps and aerial spins of Gillian Lynne's demanding choreography with terrific freshness and high-definition zest,” he said.

Neil Norman of the Daily Express also gave FOUR STARS, calling Scherzinger's rendition of Memory a “spine-tingling moment... [she] lets rip in bravura style and the audience goes wild.”

Also giving FOUR STARS, The Guardian's Michael Billington praised “a strong cast led by the former Pussycat Doll [who] bring impressive verve to the song and dance spectacular.” “John Napier's junkyard set, spills out from the stage to embrace the boxes and front stalls [and] the feline dancers also leap from the stage and prowl through the auditorium as if it were their playground. The show...still breaks down the barriers between stage and audience.”

The Telegraph's Dominic Cavendish also gave FOUR STARS, praising Scherzinger's performance which “truly makes your hairs stand on end,” and credited choreographer Dame Gillian Lynne for “the grace and poise of yet another generation of dancers.”

The Evening Standard's Henry Hitchings gave CATS yet another FOUR STAR review. He called Scherzinger's casting an “inspired decision... the former Pussycat Doll has feline grace and a voice that's impressively resonant. She captures the mournfulness of a character confronting her faded youth. When she sings Memory — the song made famous by Elaine Paige — her yearning and passion are overwhelming.”
