Hollywood blockbuster BACK TO THE FUTURE will be made into a new musical in 2015 in London's West End.
Robert Zemeckis, who co-wrote and directed the classic 1985 film starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, will reunite with co-writer Bob Gale to pen the stage adaptation, directed by Jamie Lloyd.
BACK TO THE FUTURE sees high schooler Marty McFly (Fox) travel back in time in a DeLorean car to 1955 at a critical juncture in the lives of his own teenage parents.
A huge hit that spawned two sequels, Gale said, "We can't think of a better way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film." The musical will be "true to the spirit of the film without being a slavish remake."
"The script stands on its own. It's a different version of the same story," he said.
The BACK TO THE FUTURE musical will include famous songs from the film's soundtrack, including 'The Power Of Love' by Huey Lewis And The News, 'Johnny B. Goode', 'Earth Angel' and 'Mr. Sandman'.
Gale confirmed, "We intend to use music from the movie along with brand new songs to make a version of BACK TO THE FUTURE that is fresh, entertaining and takes advantage of all the amazing things that can now be done on stage."
Composer Alan Silvestri - who scored many of Zemeckis's films, including Romancing the Stone, Forrest Gump and Cast Away - will co-author the show's music and lyrics with six-time Grammy winner Glen Ballard, who co-wrote the music for the stage adaptation of Ghost.
Jamie Lloyd (The Commitments, Urinetown) said, "I was five when I saw Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale's landmark movie and I have been a huge fan ever since. Rather than attempt to recreate such an iconic movie on stage, we have assembled a brilliant artistic team to discover a unique theatrical language to take audiences on a journey through time in a vibrant, unexpected way."
He said, "The production will include illusions, skateboarding and many other surprises that will capture the spirit of the film but freshly interpret it for a new audience."
The creative team will include skateboard consultant Andrew Willis, set designer Soutra Gilmour, lighting expert Jon Clark, and illusionist Paul Kieve.
