Kinky Boots walked away the big winner at last night's Tony Awards as Broadway handed out its top honours.

The Cyndi Lauper/Harvey Fierstein musical won six awards in total, including Best Musical and Best Actor for Billy Porter.

Lauper won Best Score for this stage adaptation of the heartwarming British indie film about a Northampton factory that specializes in shoes for drag queens. Out of its 13 nominations, Kinky Boots also scooped Best Choreography, Best Sound and Best Orchestrations.

The Royal Shakespeare Company's Matilda – that won a record-setting seven Olivier Awards in 2012 for its West End debut – won 4 Tonys, including Best Book for Dennis Kelly and Best Featured Actor for Gabriel Ebert (Mr. Wormwood). The circus-inspired Pippin also won four gongs, including Best Revival of a Musical.

Christopher Durang's comic crowdpleaser Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike picked up the Tony for Best Play, while the critically acclaimed revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf was named Best Revival of a Play.
