The four Broadway Matildas – Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro – have received Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre for originating the title role.

Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly's award-winning musical opened on the Great White Way on 12 April amid a wave of praise from critics. The New York Times called it “the most satisfying and subversive musical ever to come out of Britain”.

Time Magazine said, "It would be easy to call it the best British musical since Billy Elliot, but that, I'm afraid, would be underselling it".

Olivier Award winner Bertie Carvel is nominated for reprising his role as the terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull, a performance New York Times' Ben Brantley called "deliciously malevolent".

Based on the much-loved book by Roald Dahl, MATILDA THE MUSICAL is about a sweet little girl, surrounded by horrible grown-ups, who discovers she has supernatural powers that can be used to teach them all a lesson..

MATILDA THE MUSICAL began at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Stratford headquarters before transferring to London's Cambridge Theatre. In 2012 the production won 7 Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, setting the record for the number of awards ever won by a single show (a record now jointly held with 2013's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time). Carvel won Best Actor and the four Matilda's (Cleo Demetriou, Kerry Ingram, Sophia Kiely and Eleanor Worthington Cox) were named Best Actress.
