Almeida Theatre and Headlong's co-production of CHIMERICA, by Lucy Kirkwood, is to transfer to London's Harold Pinter Theatre this summer. The provocative new play, which is directed by Lyndsey Turner (Philadelphia, Here I Come!; Posh), will run in the West End from 6 August to 19 October 2013.

Set in Tiananmen Square, 1989. As tanks roll through Beijing and soldiers hammer on his hotel door, Joe – a young American photojournalist – captures a piece of history. But when a cryptic message is left in a Beijing newspaper more than 20 years later, Joe is driven to discover the truth behind the unknown hero he captured on film. Who was he? What happened to him? And could he still be alive?

Upon its debut at the Almeida, CHIMERICA received 5 STARS from The Guardian, Evening Standard, The Telegraph, Daily Express, Sunday Express and The Arts Desk.

Actors Stephen Campbell Moore (Joe), Benedict Wong (Zhang Lin), and Claudie Blakley (Tessa) are among the cast members reprising their roles. Full casting has yet to be announced.

Stephen Campbell Moore appeared in the original cast of The History Boys (National Theatre) and in the West End production of Clybourne Park. Kirkwood's recent work includes NSFW, which opened at the Royal Court Theatre in 2012, directed by Simon Godwin. CHIMERICA is being produced in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions, Bob Bartner and Norman Tulchin and Jean Doumanian.
