    Between the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympic Games, 2012 was a memorable year for London, and the West End was no exception. From classic Shakespearean drama to adaptations of iconic films, Broadway shows making their West End debuts, or a pair of ruby slippers becoming the hottest ticket in town, theatregoers were truly spoilt for choice!

    But the best is yet to come and 2013 is shaping up to bring even bigger and better things. To get over those winter blues, here’s a guide to West End shows that are worth braving the cold for!


    Vaudeville Theatre / playing now through 26 January
    Comedy meets drama as a star-studded cast featuring Ken Stott, Anna Friel, Downton Abbey’s Laura Carmichael and Samuel West struggles to keep their emotions at bay.     This children’s classic will melt any ice-cold heart this winter. The meek William Beech is evacuated from London to the English countryside during WWII. He is placed with the reclusive, irascible Mister Tom (the Olivier Award-winning Oliver Ford Davies), with whom he builds a remarkable and moving friendship.

    As the cross-dressing Captain Dennis, Simon Russell Beale has become the toast of London’s theatre critics garnering four and five star reviews. Set against the murderous backdrop of the Malaysian campaign at the end of WWII, Peter Nichols’ award-winning comedy is the first of the highly anticipated, star-studded season planned by former Donmar Warehouse Artistic Director Michael Grandage.

    Starring Rupert Everett as Oscar Wilde, THE JUDAS KISS makes its West End transfer following a sell-out run at the Hampstead Theatre. It is 1895 and Wilde has just published The Importance of Being Earnest to triumphant success. However the wheels are already in motion that will lead to his imprisonment, downfall and vilification, as Wilde is forced to choose between his lover and his freedom.

    The life of an orphan named Pip is changed forever following his encounter with the escaped convict Magwitch. It’s been 150 years since the publication of this Charles Dickens classic, but this is the first time it’s ever been presented as a full-length play.
