Theatre mega-producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh confirmed to The Philippine Star that plans are underway for a revival of the award-winning MISS SAIGON for 2014.
Speaking at the Tokyo premiere of the film Les Misérables, Mackintosh revealed: “Yes, I’m going to restage ‘Miss Saigon’ in London as soon as I find the theatre.”
Preliminary auditions were held in Manila in November where several actors and actresses were chosen as finalists for the Vietnam War-era musical.
“When we did the show in London 25 years ago, we spent over a year looking for the cast. I hope that in the next 18 months it would be back in London. The new version has just opened here in Japan and it’s a phenomenal success. It’s going to be a different production but still the same great MISS SAIGON,” said Mackintosh.
Renowned for having the magic touch, Mackintosh has produced some of the most successful and influential musicals in theatre history including Les Misérables, The Phantom Of The Opera, Cats, Martin Guerre and Mary Poppins. He is best-known for his collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber (Cats, The Phantom Of The Opera), and composers Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil ( Les Misérables, MISS SAIGON).
Based on Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, MISS SAIGON depicts a doomed romance in 1970s Saigon between an Vietnamese bar girl abandoned by her lover, an American lieutenant serving in the Vietnam War. MISS SAIGON first premiered in London in 1989 and debuted on Broadway in 1991. Lea Salonga shot to stardom playing the lead role of Kim, for which she won an Olivier and Tony Award.
Aside from a highly-anticipated stage revival, Mackintosh also confessed to previous rumours that a MISS SAIGON film would be green-lit should Les Misérables prove a success. The film adaptation – starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham-Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen – is to be released in the UK 11 January 2013, but has already received rave reviews from critics and audiences worldwide.
