A brand new production of Jonathan Harvey’s classic BEAUTIFUL THING will debut at the Arts Theatre next year to commemorate the play’s 20th anniversary. Starring Suranne Jones, the production runs from April 13 until 25 May 2013 with press night on 17 April, followed by a short UK tour visiting Liverpool, Leeds, and Brighton.

BEAUTIFUL THING is the uplifting urban love story of Jaime, and his classmate and neighbour Ste. Together on an inner city housing estate, the teenagers discover comedy, warmth, and the music of Mama Cass through their loud-mouthed next door neighbour Leah. This play exquisitely captures what it is to be 16, full of hope and optimism, and falling for your first love.

In 1993 BEAUTIFUL THING premiered at the Bush Theatre and sold out its five-week stay before moving to the Donmar Warehouse, and ultimately the Duke of York’s. Jonathan Harvey wrote the play when he was just 24 years old, but earned an Olivier nomination for Best Comedy and the John Whiting Award. Channel 4 films released a film adaptation in 1996, which went on to be a cult hit. Harvey is also regular writer for Coronation Street, wrote the hit series Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, in addition to the best 2012 novel All She Wants. His other plays include Canary and Corrie!

Portraying Jamie’s mother Sandra, Suranne Jones is best known as Karen McDonald in Coronation Street, during which time she also worked closely with Harvey. She is also recognisable as DC Rachel Bailey in Scott & Bailey, the human tardis in the 2011 Doctor Who, A Touch of Cloth, and The Secret of Crickley Hall (BBC1). Jones has previously appeared on stage in Top Girls, with Jon Barrowman and Rob Lowe in A Few Good Men, and Noel’s Coward’s Blythe Spirit.

BEAUTIFUL THING will be directed by Nikolai Foster, whose recent productions include Flashdance on the West End, as well as Hayfever, Merrily We Roll Along, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Annie. As Associate Director of the West Yorkshire Playhouse, his work has been seen internationally, and in most of the UK’s leading regional theatres and touring houses.

Featuring designs by Colin Richmond, BEAUTIFUL THING will be produced by Tom O’Connell for QNQ Ltd, who recently co-produced Blake Harrison’s West End debut in Step 9 of 12.

In its 20-year history, many young actors have featured in BEAUTIFUL THING, including Jonny Lee Miller, Hugh Bonneville, Philip Glennister, Andrew Garfield, and Rhys Ifans. Its unique take on the coming of age tale has struck a chord worldwide, having been produced 25 times internationally, with dates in China, France, Canada, Australia and Holland. Further casting to be announced, and tickets go on sale soon!
