Next year fans of the hit musical WICKED won’t have to visit London in order to catch a glimpse of their two favourite witches! Starting at the Palace Theatre in Manchester on 12 September 2013, the production will embark a major tour throughout the UK and Ireland.

After first opening on Broadway in 2003, WICKED jumped across the pond and took the West End by storm in 2006. Since then more than 4.5 million have visited the Apollo Victoria Theatre to hear the “untold story” of the Witches of Oz.

The stage is set prior to and after their encounters with Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion (and Toto too). As sorcery students at Shiz University, the popular blonde Glinda and the misunderstood Elphaba form an unlikely friendship – one that is eventually undone by their conflicting personalities, and leads to them fulfilling their destinies as the Good Witch of the North, and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Executive Producer Michael McCabe said: “With WICKED continuing its phenomenally successful London run, we are very proud to also now be announcing this major tour of the UK and Ireland. We are absolutely delighted that the premiere will take place in the amazing city of Manchester which has such a prestigious history of hosting the regional premieres of so many world class musicals”.

Andrew Stokes, Chief Executive, Marketing Manchester said: “WICKED is one of the most popular new musicals of our time and we are delighted that Manchester will be the first port of call for its UK tour as part of the 'Manchester Gets It First' initiative. The Palace Theatre is an icon of the city and a major contributor to our night-time economy. It is a worthy stage for the production’s first performance out of the capital and will no doubt prove popular with the over one million international visitors a year that the city-region attracts”.

This enormously popular story and its beloved characters continue the legacy first introduced by L. Frank Baum in his 1900 children’s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and further immortalized by the iconic film The Wizard of Oz (1939), starring Judy Garland.

The current London production continues to make history. Now in its seventh year, WICKED recently celebrated its landmark 2500th performance on 8 September 2012, becoming one of the top 20 longest-running musicals in West End history. The latest cast features a good witch gone bad, with Louise Dearman returning to the WICKED stage, this time as Elphaba. Dearman becomes the first actress to portray both Glinda and Elphaba, while Gina Beck fills Glinda’s shoes and Ben Freeman plays Fivero.
