Russia’s award-winning theatre company Vakhtangov brings it ground-breaking production of UNCLE VANYA to the West End as part of the Russian Season in the West End – International Theatre Platform
Russian Season in the West End is an International Theatre Platform which aims to bring the very best of Russian’s world famous theatre scene to London. The season is a co-operative venture made possible by the active involvement of some of the greats of the international arts, business and media worlds.
As part of this season award-winning Moscow based Vakhtangov Theatre will be performing its breathtaking and stunningly realised modern interpretation of Chekhov’s UNCLE VANYA at the Noel Coward theatre from the 5-10 November.
Winner of Best Production at Russia’s Golden Mask Awards (equivalent to an Emmy Award), this is Chekhov as you have never seen it before; performed in London by the company responsible for many of Russia’s most critically acclaimed and best-loved productions, under the direction of Rimas Tuminas, one of the most influential directors working in Russia and Europe today.
In Vakhtangov’s UNCLE VANYA there’s no Chekhovian mansion, no cosy arm-chairs, no table laid for lunch with a lacy tablecloth and hot samovar; no feeling of ‘home’ where several generations have lived. Instead Rimas Tuminas has released the stage from the familiar and the domestic, leaving behind a battlefield of passions, broken illusions and unrealized hopes. Daily life turns imperceptibly into poetry, the drama acquires a tinge of tender irony and every detail on the stage arouses the audience's emotions.
Vakhtangov is home to many of the best known Russian stars of stage and screen. UNCLE VANYA features memorable performances from Sergey Makovetsky, Vladimir Simonov, Ludmila Maksakova, Vladimir Vdovichenkov and Galina Konovalova, seventy years with Vakhtangov, forty of those years leading the troupe, and Honoured Russian Artist of the Russian Federation making her West End debut.
Composer Faustas Latenas has created a mesmerizing soundscape for the production, illustrating and underscoring the drama. Sets and scenery are by Tuminas’ long time collaborator, Adomas Yatsovskis, who creates meticulously conceived open spaces where anything can happen.
Russian Season in the West End- International Theatre Platform is produced by Arts Bridge (Executive Producer) and Oksana Nemchuk (General Producer), who were behind the enormously successful Sovremennik Theatre season at the Noel Coward Theatre in 2011.
Please note that this production of Uncle Vanya will be performed in Russian with English subtitles.
